Why I Paint

Canvas for Hope — children receiving paintings from Elena Makievsky

People often ask me why I paint.

The answer has never been about the paint, the canvas, or even the finished artwork.

I paint because somewhere, a child is fighting the biggest battle of their life.

For more than a decade, every painting I've created has been a gift for a child facing cancer or another life-threatening illness. Each one carries far more than color — it carries hope, love, encouragement, and a reminder that someone they've never met believes in them.

Sometimes a painting brings a smile. Sometimes it becomes a comfort. Sometimes it helps a family through a day they thought they couldn't face.

The two photo collages tell this story better than words ever could.

Every face represents a child, a family, a moment of courage, and a reminder of why I continue to pick up my paintbrush. Together, they are a mosaic of hope — a journey filled with smiles, tears, love, and countless reminders that even the smallest act of kindness can make a lasting difference.

That is why I paint.

Not because I believe I can change the world by myself, but because I believe one act of kindness can change someone's world.

One painting.
One child.
One family.
One heart at a time.

Hope grows when we share it.

And as long as there is someone who needs a little more hope, I'll keep painting.
